Edinburgh Castle and The Royal Mile Tour
Edinburgh Castle is an ancient fortress sitting on top of an extinct volcano in the heart of Edinburgh. People have been living there for at least 3,000 years. It is one of the most sieged upon castles in the whole of Europe, mostly due to the pesky English! The castle is extremely busy, and it is recommended that you purchase your ticket well in advance.
The tour begins on the historic Royal Mile in the UNESCO World Heritage Old Town of Edinburgh. We will meander up one of the most iconic streets in the whole of Scotland, learning about life in medieval Edinburgh and what it was like to live in a walled city of 0.2 square miles with up to 80,000 other inhabitants. The tour of the Royal Mile will last 1.5 hours and will finish inside the castle with a one hour guided tour of the castle.
The castle has the oldest surviving building in Edinburgh, Saint Margaret’s Chapel, which is almost 900 years old. It also has three museums, two prisons, the Stone of Destiny and the oldest crown jewels in Britain. We will hear tales of kings and queens, ghosts, prisoners of war, sieges, escapes and much more besides. We are not allowed to guide inside any of the buildings inside the castle, so the tour of the castle will last one hour and will finish in Crown Square, in the heart of the castle, where you will have as much time to spend inside the castle as you like.
Whisper headsets will be provided - please bring your own headphones, normal audio plug and not bluetooth, or I can provide cheap ones for £2. Admission is not included and you should purchase your tickets well in advance, and remember the castle has allocated time slots. This tour will start at 10:00 am, so book tickets time for entry between 11:00 and 11:30 am. Alternatively, the afternoon tour starts at 1:00 pm, so castle entry should be booked between 2:00 and 2:30 pm.
